MIAMI BEACH SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL’S
ACADEMY OF HOSPITALITY AND TOURISM
WIN AT NATIONAL LODGING MANAGEMENT CHAMPIONSHIP
(Miami Beach, FL) April 22, 2005— The four-member student team of Kenia Garcia, Guy Guilherme, Colby Goncalves and Vanessa Londono proved that study and hard work does pay off! As a result, these Miami Beach High School students won at the national championship of the Lodging Management Program student competition sponsored by the The Educational Institute of the American Hotel & Lodging Association. Special thanks to industry partners who helped the students prepare for the competition – Greater Miami & the Beaches Hotel Association, Loews Miami Beach Hotel, Best Western Beach Resort, Biscayne Bay Marriott, and the Hyatt Regency Miami. The national competition held at the Contemporary Resort in Orlando, consisted of three main events. The Beach team placed First Place in the Hospitality Project. This event judged the students as hotel operators in making decisions about a food and beverage event wich included the invitation, banquet event order, menu and a floor plan. The team also placed third in the Knowledge Bowl competition which demonstrated their skills and knowledge in Lodging Management. As winners in these two events, the Beach team placed third in the overall national competition and each team member received the following scholarships: $5000 scholarship from Kendall College, renewable each year for a total of $20,000; $1500 scholarship from Johnson & Wales University, renewable each year for a total of $6000; $1000 scholarship from San Diego State University; $1500 scholarship from Bethune-Cookman College, renewable each year for a total of $6000 and $1000 scholarship from the University of Houston, renewable each year for a total of $4000.
Miami Beach Senior High School is a member program of the National Academy Foundation (NAF), a national network of career academies to support the development of America’s youth toward personal and professional success in high school, higher education and throughout their careers. Locally, through the School Choice and Parental Options Office, Miami-Dade County Public Schools has four Academies of Hospitality and Tourism.
